Welcome

Welcome to the Loving Christmas Advent Weblog

caleb at christmas Again this year, life has taken turns that prevented me from creating new devotional in time for Advent. Yet, the wealth of past years efforts makes it easy to compile a selection of thoughts and ideas to celebrate the Lord Jesus as the center of this season.

Since I began in Advent season of 2006, I posted daily devotionals. Most of the years had a special theme, and I added pages to explain and illustrate the traditions attached to the Christmas season.

As a child, I loved the Advent Calendars my grandmother sent me, so, of course, this weblog just seemed the natural outcome. May the holiness and the joy of the season be communicated throughout these pages!

You may enjoy visiting the rest of the ”Loving Christmas site for ideas on traditional celebration of the season.

Christmas Carols: Good King Wenceslas

carol lyrics

Engraving by Brothers Dalziel Public Domain Lyrics for “Good King Wenceslas” Good King Wences’las looked out, on the Feast of Stephen, When the snow lay round about, deep and crisp and even; Brightly shone the moon that night, tho’ the frost was cruel, When a poor man came in sight, gath’ring winter fuel. “Hither, page,…

First Sunday of Advent

fun to do + preparations

Today is the candle of prophecy, or as some call it “the candle of hope”. We recall the prophecies that God revealed during centuries leading up to the advent of Jesus the Messiah, our Savior. “The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy” -Revelation 19:10 Consider using a Christmas Calendar of Kindness this month…

Inspiring New Children’s Album

Whether it is too saccharine, or nerve wracking for parents, or insipid, so many things made just for kids might make them bored or you ready to stop your ears. That will not happen with the inspiring album full of lovely lyrics, innovative…

Humbly Welcome the King of Kings

advent

It is nearly Christmas Day, when we hear the old story again, of how Christ entered this world so humbly. But what of us? We are ushered into the presence of the King of Kings when we worship before Jesus. Whenever we pray, enter a church service, or give thanks for a meal, He is…

Is Happiness the Same as Joy?

advent + lovely to think

It seems as though words so closely linked as “joy” and “happiness” would become interchangeable in our minds. Perhaps seeing the difference as degree, but are we causing some emotional confusion when we make happiness and joy so alike? Pursuing happiness is a major activity, and we like to say “whatever makes you happy” as…

We Are Small

lovely to think

In our world, we are small, and likewise, in the universe our world is infinitesimal. Many people have difficulty believing that people on such a small part of the universe could actually matter to God. For some this is where they have a departure from the idea of God at all. But today, perhaps we…

Learning about God is a Joy

advent

When people are afraid they won’t be accepted they avoid contact. This especially happens when people consider getting to know God. Avoiding God can range from keeping a static view that was handed to them from someone else (a person or an institution) all the way down the spectrum to simply believing there is no…

Candle of Joy Compilation

advent + good to enjoy

For an Advent wreath, this is the pink candle, or the “Candle of Joy”. We move closer to the celebration of Christmas, and we may make a choice to concentrate on the joyful aspects of the season. Choosing Joy This is easier, the more we consider the great riches of Heaven that was given us…

Preparing for Joy

advent

Promises to David, Foretelling Christ’s Kingship 2 Samuel 7:14-16 “I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands.  But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away…
